CH227 Announcements
General Chemistry Laboratory
Fall Term 2009
Dr. Deborah Exton
Nov. 29, 2009
- The laboratory practicum exam will be held during the week of Nov. 30 during the regularly scheduled lab times.
- There WILL be a lab lecture that week to discuss the exam.
- All chemicals used in the exam will be in the same form as they were for the "Identification of Common Chemicals" lab.
- The following testing materials will be available for your use during the exam:
- labware basket, equipped as previously
- pH paper
- 6M HCl
- AgNO3 solution
- BaCl2 solution
- 6M H2SO4
- KMnO4 solution
- 6M NaOH
You will have 15 min at the beginning of the lab period to collect any testing materials which you think you will need. It would be wise to make a "shopping list" beforehand in order to optimize your time in lab.
- There will be a total of 20 chemicals to identify by both name and formula.
- The 90-min exam will be formatted as follows: The first 40 min will consist of ten 4-min test periods. There will then be a 5-min break. This will be followed by a second set of ten 4-min test periods. At the end of each 4-min test period, your TA will call time and you must pass your sample along in the indicated direction. The 5-min breaks may be used for cleaning glassware and making final tests on samples of compounds that you have saved. At the end of the entire test there will be another 5-min break during which you are expected to complete your work and hand in your answer sheet. All papers must be submitted within 5 min of the last test period.
If one sample is quite easy to identify you may not go on to the next sample, but you may go back and work on other samples that you have saved.
- With the exception of the testing reagents and your flow chart, the only resource you will be allowed to use is your lab notebook. You will not be able to consult with your TA or other students during the exam.

Information concerning the Identification of Common Chemicals lab:
- A pre-lab is required when you go to lab during the week of Nov. 2.
- A preliminary flow chart is due when you go to lab during the week of Nov. 9. During your lab period that week you will gather information that will allow you to complete the flow chart.
- The lab lecture on Nov. 9 will address questions that arise during lab. There will be no reading questions due.
- Completed flow chart is due in lab during the week of Nov. 16. Flow charts will be graded for completion but not correctness.
- NFPA hazard diamond (page 5 of lab text) is also due in lab during the week of Nov. 16.
- Label each square with the appropriate color and hazard category.
- Select one substance used in lab this week. What hazards (and severity) are associated with this substance?
- More information about the NFPA hazard warning system is available on the chemlabs Safety pages.
- More information about this lab can be found by visiting the Virtual TA's Frequently Asked Questions Page.

Class results from the galvanized nail lab (unrounded values)
- N = 3017 (= number of data points)
- mass loss/mm2: mean = 3.2617 E-4 g/mm2, standard deviation = 3.328311 E-4
- % mass loss/nail: mean = 8.34115%, standard deviation = 5.42120%

The pre-lab lecture for week one is an on-line lecture. Please view it at your convenience and answer the four associated (graded) questions.
Sep. 23, 2009
There WILL BE labs held during the first week of classes. Due to the large number of students wishing to register for CH227, students who miss the first lab may be administratively dropped from the course.
